Advent – December 1

We thought we’d try something a bit different this year with our Advent calendar. In the past we’ve filled it with toys or candy which is well-received but doesn’t quite do the task of making the boys think about what we’re actually preparing for. So this year the calendar is filled with little slips of paper which have a task that we do together in order to get ready for Christmas.

Day 1: Make paper snowflakes and decorate the windows

At first the boys were a bit hesitant but soon got into the spirit and we had a whole pile of lovely snowflakes. Of course we had to make a quick stop on the way home from work just to get paper as all the paper in the house had been used up on masterpieces covering a wide range of subjects – the alphabet of Asher’s language, the immune system, circuits, math problems, hand-drawn “blogs”, unscramble word games, etc. Paper is a precious commodity around here.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

I had to work today so we put off our Thanksgiving celebration until Saturday. The boys have been watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and asked if they could have the Thanksgiving meal that Snoopy makes – buttered toast, popcorn, pretzel sticks, and jellybeans. We decided that was a pretty good meal to celebrate with so that’s what was for lunch. Mr. 6 actually decided that the meal really needed some protein so they added ham and cheese sandwichs to round out the meal.

Even Master 0 got his own piece of toast.

The boys love the Charlie Brown movies. Last year we watched A Charlie Brown Christmas many, many times leading up the Christmas and well into the new year. This year we’ve enjoyed alternating with A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving – at least there’s some variety!

Math problems

Mr. 6 checked out some books on math from the library last week and has been happily writing long addition problems for himself and solving them. He has really gotten the hang of carrying a number to the next column. He asked me if long subtraction was the same as long addition was the same and so I explained that you borrow from the next column rather than carrying the number. This led to long multiplication and long division which he is still getting the hang of.

Of course, what do you do when you learn a cool new thing? Teach it to your brother. Mr. 6 spent quite a bit of time explaining long addition to Mr. 4 and the two of them happily practiced math problems while I got lunch ready.

Getting bigger

Master 0 is almost 7 months and is earnestly trying to become mobile as fast as possible. He working on the scoot and will grab just about anything if it is within his reach which is why we no longer have a lid to our sugar bowl. He likes to try to repeat sounds back at you and has a pretty good “ah goo” down. He eats carrots, apples, peas, pears, bananas (his favorite), rice cakes, bread, oatmeal, and yogurt (added tonight and eaten with gusto). He watches his brothers very closely to see the right things to do, likes the swings, and loves to bounce.

A look inside the computer

Last week the Daddy opened up one of our old computers and explained to the boys how it worked. Everything from the CPU to cache to video card to hard drive to the fan to cool it all down. The boys loved it and spent the next few days building their own computer out of legos. The model was placed in the museum and admired by all. Each part was carefully placed by Mr. 6 and he knows where each piece goes. So if you happened to bump it and the video card comes off and you put it back in the wrong place, just be forewarned!
