Pandemic

Our new favorite game is Pandemic. It’s a game in which everyone works together to cure disease. The boys have really adopted this game and get it out to play on their own. They also talk about germs and epidemics and much of their play has revolved around this. Today I asked if they could make their own version of the game so they started on maps.

Isaac’s map was rather free form and there was an elaborate story of him curing the diseases in different cities. He tells me that an electric generator turned on and he cleared up all the cubes (the symbol of disease in pandemic).

Ethan’s map was more exact and he even made cards for his game. The rules of Ethan’s games are usually pretty involved so you have to pay attention during the instructions.

Our garden

There was much excitement this year about a big garden. We had been introduced to the idea of the square foot garden by some friends and thought to use the idea to grow our vegetables. On Saturday and Sunday, David with some help from the boys built planters. Thanks to the arrival of Nana we were able to fill them and get some plants started. Ethan became our resident grub killer although did decide to save one in a small tupperware container. He’s named “grubbie” and is currently living on our counter. Isaac and his dump truck hauled around dirt, garden tools, grubs, or anything else that needed moving. It was a great project but we were all pretty beat by the time we came inside.

Our spring vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, cucumbers, and snap peas.

Ride on, oh 4.

On value.

Your father’s winning bid on a “suprise box” at an auction: $1

The 10 Kennedy half-dollars contained inside: $5

Just one of those half-dollars becoming the most valued specimen in the treasured coin collection of one of your Kindergarten students: priceless.

Thanks, Mrs. H.

Gliding to riding

For two years now, Mr. 4 and his Glider Rider have been inseparable.  It has two wheels, but no pedals, and he’s an expert at picking up speed and coasting through impressive S turns.  Most days, it goes from home to Alewife to Brimmer St to Park Street Kids and back the whole day, about a 2.5 mile round trip.

He’s been trying out Miss Upstair’s Princess pedal bike with training wheels every time he has a chance, so Tuesday night, it was time to break out the Alligator pedal bike, Mr. 6’s first two-wheeler.  After adjusting the seat height and pumping the tires, I had every intention of putting on the training wheels, but figured I’d let Isaac have a go at two wheels + pedals first.

Within 10 minutes, the kid was able to pedal for 16 seconds unassisted.  The next evening, we stopped counting.   He still needs a little push to get started sometimes, but I have little doubt that after another day or two of waiting for me to catch up before getting started again, he’ll have self-starting figured out.

Score one for the Glider Rider.  Score one for Mr. 4.

P.S.  Still no baby

Still waiting

Yesterday we were convinced the baby was coming – contractions were regular and getting stronger. We had yet another discussion with the kids about the plan and called our friends who were going to watch them. Everyone has excited. Then after a few hours they started going away. We decided we might as well get some sleep and woke up this morning with no baby in sight. Sigh!

We’re hoping this is all because Ethan prayed a few weeks ago that we have an Easter baby and that this guy will choose to celebrate with us tomorrow. Although this morning Ethan said “What I meant is that I wanted the baby here to celebrate Easter with us.” So I’m a little concerned the messages are all mixed up!

We’re worried that this is his way of making his personality known early – we do not tend to have mellow, go-with-the-flow kids and they seem to be increasing in willpower with birth order. We may be in trouble!
